Toni S. Burke was the previous Director for the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program and began as the Segal Management Fellow at the Center for Youth and Communities. Toni was responsible for managing the growing network of Segal Fellows and Founders. In her role as a Management Fellow she was responsible for working collaboratively on special projects with senior research staff at the Center for Youth and Communities.
Prior to her work with the Segal Program, Toni completed her Master’s in Public Policy degree at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. While at the Heller School, Toni focused her research on social justice philanthropy and education policy. She had the distinguished honor of becoming the first Sillerman Fellow at the Sillerman Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy. In her role she worked at Southern Partners Fund in Atlanta, GA, as a Policy Fellow to advance numerous policy issues affecting the rural South. Her work included collaborating with regional funders to advance the rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina and creating a federal policy agenda for rural America.
Toni is committed to changing the odds for children, youth, and families. After receiving as B.S. in Human Development and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Connecticut, Toni worked as a Case Manager, where she created and implemented an after-school program for at-risk youth that combined mentoring and tutoring with community service projects. Toni is now the Executive Director of City Year San Jose and currently lives in San Jose with her husband, Mark Burke.
