Lamar Butler

Lamar Butler is the millennial version of the Renaissance man. He is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of The Alabama State University (ASU), with a degree in Forensic Chemistry. Lamar started out his college career with dreams of being a hip hop background dancer, and thus spent his freshmen year pursuing those interests. For various reasons, he eventually found his way into government and became the Attorney General for SGA as a sophomore and the Vice President as a Junior. He has been a Tom Joyner Hercules Scholar and a White House HBCU All Star, the very first one for ASU. Lamar has also been an intern at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he worked on the Secondary Ion Mass Spec. team and researched diversity and inclusion in STEM. He also interned at the White House and traveled the world with the Semester at Sea program. He is a member of Delta Gamma Phi Theatre Fraternity, Inc., Nu Alpha Nu Service Fraternity Inc., and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is one of the Visionaries/Founders of Beta Phi Alpha Dance Honor Society and was the charter president of the ASU chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success. As he matriculated through college, he found he had a variety of interests, but his passion laid with empowering and inspiring the youth, while also fighting injustice and inequity in this country. Lamar participated in two prestigious pre law programs at both Harvard Law School and Florida State University Law School. He channeled the knowledge and energy from his plethora of experiences and brought it all into his classroom as an 8th grade science teacher in South Carolina where he successfully led a group of students from 35% meeting State standards to 88% one school year. He also developed a leadership program focused on academic, professional, and personal growth as an extracurricular for students. Lamar gives credit for all his accomplishments to God, his family, and to his mentors that have helped him along the way. Lamar is excited to build a bridge of resources and opportunity for under resourced communities as a Segal Fellow.
