Imani Islam

2019 Brandeis Undergraduate Segal Fellow

Imani Islam is an artist and activist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. A proudly identified Afro-Caribbean, she is 2020 Brandeis graduate with a double major in Sociology and Afro and African American Studies. Imani is pursuing a Masters in Social Work from New York University. She is also interning with the Policy Athletic League providing student counseling.

Her 2019 Summer Segal Internship was with The Art Connection in Boston. As a poet and dancer, Imani believes the arts provides a great sense of therapy for those suffering from mental illness (i.e. anxiety and depression), especially for people of color. Imani believes that the arts are a building stone in dialogue for those dealing with mental illness to express themselves and be acknowledged, but also as an overall positive force for change within society.
